Tour (Sultry)

Tour (Sultry) reflects a bit of self-conscious hero worship. The piece was made during cancer survivor icon Lance Armstrong’s amazing victory in the 2001 Tour de France. Its working title was “Lance and Me,” as I boldly decided to combine images representing the cyclist and the artist, vicariously participating in the myth of the heroic survivor. (Artists can get away with stuff like this, although they typically refrain from confessing!) The “lone star” button was discovered by my son as we rummaged through the discount bin at a fabric store. Just as I gave him the suggestion of searching for a star, Nathan found one in his hands.
